Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has rejected claims that he was present near a polling booth in the constituency to influence voters during the New Patriotic Party’s ongoing flagbearer contest.
In a statement issued on Saturday, January 31, Mr Afenyo-Markin described the allegations as false and misleading, saying he has strictly adhered to Electoral Commission and party guidelines throughout the process.
“At no time have I been anywhere near the voting area as claimed, nor have I engaged in any conduct that could be construed, even remotely, as undue influence,” he stated.
The Effutu MP explained that his presence in the constituency on polling day was limited to exercising his franchise and undertaking lawful oversight in full compliance with the rules governing the exercise.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said the latest allegation is part of what he described as a series of orchestrated attempts by adversaries to undermine him since the commencement of the flagbearer race. He recalled an earlier incident in which a manipulated video circulated online after the signing of the NPP peace pact in Accra on January 22, 2026, falsely suggesting he refused to applaud a particular candidate.
“These vile tactics are as transparent as they are desperate,” he said.
The Minority Leader called on the Electoral Commission, security agencies and political actors to prioritise peace, transparency and the integrity of the democratic process, warning that misinformation could erode voter confidence.
“Crass fabrications such as these only seek to sow discord and undermine the integrity of our democracy,” he added, urging all parties to allow the process to proceed freely and fairly.
He further invited journalists and independent observers to verify events on the ground in Winneba, noting that media coverage provides objective accounts of developments at polling centres.
