The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is today, Saturday, January 31, conducting its presidential primary to select a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Party delegates from all regions are participating in the vote, which is widely seen as a defining moment for the NPP following its loss in the 2024 national elections.

The contest features five prominent figures: former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; and businessman and outspoken party stalwart, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

In total, about 211,000 delegates are expected to cast their ballots at more than 300 approved polling centres across the country.

The primary comes after several months of vigorous campaigning, including policy discussions and nationwide outreach programmes by the aspirants, which have heightened enthusiasm within the party.

To ensure a peaceful process, the five candidates earlier signed a peace accord, committing themselves to respect the results of the primary and to work collectively to preserve unity within the NPP after the polls.
