Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will struggle to persuade Ghanaians to vote for them again, given what he described as their record in government and the current state of the economy.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on Monday, January 26, Mr Kwakye Ofosu was asked for his views on the NPP’s upcoming presidential primaries and whether the process could improve the party’s electoral chances.
In response, he said the experiences of Ghanaians under the NPP make it difficult for the party to regain public trust.
“My view is that, given what they put the people of Ghana through, and given the dramatic transformation in the economy, they will find it hard to convince Ghanaians to choose them over the NDC,” he said.
He said that voters make decisions based on lived experiences rather than personalities. “The average voter is a rational decision-maker. I don’t believe that it matters who they are,” he stated.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, senior figures within the NPP collectively presided over what he described as poor governance, with particular responsibility resting on the party’s leading presidential hopeful, former Vice President Dr Bawumia.
“They were all together in the poor governance that we witnessed, and particularly for the front-runner, Dr Bawumia, he was the one who was front and centre of economic management,” he said.
He also pointed to what he described as contradictions in the NPP’s own assessment of Dr Bawumia’s role in managing the economy.
“Except that lately, it is not even clear what they themselves think was the case. In one breath, they say he was responsible for every economic policy. In another breath, he was not in charge of the economy.”
“In another breath, it is his policies that are underpinning the Ghanaian economy. And then another breath, they say the economy is in shambles because people are suffering,” he said.
According to him, this lack of clarity weakens the NPP’s credibility in the eyes of voters.
“So clearly, one does not know what the NPP themselves think about it. And that kind of confusion, in my view, does not convince the electorate that they are ready to govern this country properly.”
Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the governing NDC remains focused on its own responsibilities. “But we wish them well. We will, however, continue to focus on delivering on our mandate.”
“We believe that once we deliver that mandate properly, the people will make a choice that reflects the delivery of that mandate when the time comes for them to go to the elections again,” he added.
