The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) support base in the Ashanti region has been scattered due to the “Alan factor”, according to Professor Ransford Gyampo. This has resulted in a significant loss of support for the party in the region.
Professor Gyampo noted that the party’s support base is no longer solid in the Ashanti Region, making it difficult for the party to win elections. He emphasized that the party needs someone who can reach beyond its traditional support base to appeal to floating voters.
The “Alan factor” refers to the perceived rift between Alan Kyerematen and the party, which has led to a divide in the party’s support base. This has resulted in a significant number of party members in the Ashanti Region switching allegiance.
Former Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, shocked the nation by resigning from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on September 25, 2023. Despite recently emerging third in the party’s super delegates conference, Kyerematen cited unfair treatment, hostility, and brutality towards him and his supporters as reasons for his departure.
Addressing the nation from the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, Kyerematen expressed his disappointment with the National Council’s handling of issues he raised after the super delegates conference in August 2023. He lamented that the party has undergone an unhealthy transition in recent years, hijacked by selected leaders, making it impossible for him to continue as a member.
