Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of Ghana’s National Sports Authority, has revealed plans to experience the 2026 FIFA World Cup from within Ghana, choosing to remain in the country rather than traveling abroad for coverage. Having started his career as a sports journalist, Ampofo Ankrah has previously covered four World Cups — 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 — following the Ghana Black Stars and reporting on their matches.
With the 2026 tournament being co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Ampofo Ankrah intends to enjoy the event from home and immerse himself in the atmosphere generated by fans watching the Black Stars compete. This will mark the first World Cup he will experience in a non-journalistic capacity, reflecting both his professional growth and personal connection to Ghanaian football.
June 2026 will coincide with the 20th anniversary of Ghana’s historic run to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, a milestone that continues to inspire both players and fans. Over the past four tournaments, Ampofo Ankrah has closely followed the national team and its supporters, observing the vibrant and passionate fan culture surrounding the Black Stars.
Remaining in Ghana will allow him to witness firsthand the excitement of local fans during the tournament, strengthening his role as the nation’s sports chief while celebrating the Black Stars’ international campaigns. This decision highlights the growing enthusiasm for football in Ghana and underscores the importance of engaging domestic audiences during global sporting events.
