The University of Cape Coast (UCC) descended into disorder on Thursday, October 30, 2025, during the much-anticipated National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) quarterfinals featuring Adisadel College, Prempeh College, and Mfantsipim School.
The quarterfinal event, expected to attract large crowds from all three schools, was abruptly postponed after violent clashes broke out among some supporters, causing widespread confusion. Eyewitnesses indicated that several students were physically assaulted while trying to enter the UCC auditorium.
Observers and reports from local media suggested that insufficient security arrangements contributed to the chaos, making it challenging for organizers to control the large and agitated crowd.
Authorities eventually deployed additional security personnel to restore order and ensure the safety of contestants, spectators, and staff. Organizers have confirmed that the quarterfinals will be rescheduled, with further details to be announced.
The incident has sparked criticism regarding crowd management and event security, highlighting the need for stricter measures during high-profile student competitions.
