A delegation from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) paid a courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
The visit by the NYPD team forms part of an effort to strengthen operational cooperation between the two Countries police services.
The delegation engaged the leadership of the Ghana Police Service, including members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), in discussions which centred on modern policing practices, the use of technology in law enforcement, and deeper collaboration in addressing transnational crime.
However, a major focus of the engagements was the growing role of technology in policing.
During deliberations, both parties shared experiences on data-driven policing models, digital investigative tools, and intelligence platforms that support operational planning and decision-making.
The NYPD delegation outlined its institutional approaches to transparency and internal oversight, while the Ghana Police Service highlighted ongoing reforms and accountability structures within Ghana’s policing system.
Officer safety and welfare also featured prominently in the discussions, with emphasis on training, equipment, and institutional systems designed to protect officers while improving operational performance.
The meeting further examined issues of police accountability in democratic governance.
Central to the discussions was a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions. The framework is expected to enhance cooperation through information sharing, specialised training opportunities, and collaboration in the investigation of transnational criminal networks.
During the visit, the NYPD team also held working engagements with key operational units of the Ghana Police Service, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the INTERPOL Accra National Central Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate.
These meetings focused on strengthening investigative cooperation, intelligence coordination, and responses to evolving transnational crime threats.
The delegation also toured the Joint Operations Centre (JOC) at the Police Headquarters, where they received a briefing on Ghana’s integrated command and control system used to coordinate nationwide police operations and incident response.
One notable proposal to emerge from the visit was the possibility of officer exchange programmes between the two institutions.
The arrangement under discussion could see a senior NYPD detective stationed at the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra, while a senior Ghana Police Service officer may be embedded within the NYPD Intelligence Bureau in New York.
Beyond engagements within the police service, the delegation paid courtesy calls on the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Charles Alhassan Kipo, where discussions focused on national security coordination and intelligence cooperation between Ghanaian and United States security agencies.
The delegation also met with the Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson.
The visit underscores growing institutional collaboration between the Ghana Police Service and the NYPD as both sides seek to strengthen international policing partnerships and enhance their capacity to confront emerging security challenges.
