Officers Celebrate as Dr. Dampare is Dismissed – See Their Reactions to New IGP

The appointment of Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) has sparked widespread celebration among police officers, marking a significant shift in leadership for the Ghana Police Service.

Sworn into office by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, March 14, at the Jubilee House, IGP Yohuno takes over from Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. His first visit to the Police Headquarters was met with cheers, excitement, and open jubilation from officers eager for a new direction in leadership.

Some police personnel went as far as spraying money on the newly appointed IGP, a dramatic gesture symbolizing their approval and high expectations for his tenure.

However, not all reactions were celebratory. Alongside the joy, some officers openly criticized the former IGP, Dr. Dampare, branding his leadership as oppressive. They described his administration as dictatorial, suggesting that his removal had “liberated” the police service.

The transition in leadership is part of a broader restructuring aimed at strengthening law enforcement and boosting morale within the service. Officers now look forward to a new era under IGP Yohuno, hopeful that his leadership will bring much-needed change.
