Makola Market’s only dedicated health facility—a clinic once celebrated for bringing affordable medical attention to traders and shoppers—has deteriorated into a depressing symbol of neglect.
The facility, originally set up many years ago by the late former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings to make healthcare easily accessible to the thousands of people working in and around the market, now struggles to deliver the same purpose it was built for.
A recent assessment by GhanaWeb TV uncovered severe infrastructure decay. Walls are cracked, glass panes are shattered, and essential medical tools appear old and worn out. The environment inside is far from ideal—small, stuffy rooms accommodate waiting patients while healthcare workers push through their challenges with inadequate supplies.
The market community, especially women who depend on the clinic daily, fear that the once-reliable centre is edging towards total collapse. Many long-time traders say they have witnessed decades pass without a single major repair, leaving them worried about where they will turn for urgent treatment if the clinic becomes unusable.
