The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspected armed robbers following an intelligence-led operation in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
The suspects have been identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana, also known as Saaga, and Adu Yakubu. They were arrested on May 5, 2026, in connection with a series of robbery attacks in the Talensi District and parts of the North East Region.
According to police investigations, the suspects gathered at Gbane, a mining community in the Talensi District, on May 4 after travelling from Yagaba and Fumbisi to allegedly carry out a robbery operation. During the attack, they reportedly robbed four motorbikes and several mobile phones from victims.
In a statement, police said the suspects admitted during interrogation to multiple robbery incidents along the Yagaba-Fumbisi and Yagaba-Nanguruma roads.
The suspects also reportedly confessed to their involvement in the robbery attack on the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga on March 22, 2025. The incident gained widespread attention after a viral video showed armed men wielding an AK-47 assault rifle during the robbery.
Investigators further revealed that the suspects admitted to several attacks at mining sites in Gbane, where they allegedly made away with gold and large sums of money belonging to miners and residents.
Police said the suspects later led officers to a farm near Biung, close to Gbane, where the gang leader, Amadu Rahman, had allegedly hidden an AK-47 rifle.
A search conducted at the location led to the retrieval of the rifle, bearing serial number 68100563, together with 87 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a fertiliser sack.
However, during the operation to retrieve the weapon, suspect Amadu Rahman reportedly collapsed. He was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The remaining three suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court to face prosecution.
