A horrifying case of domestic violence has rocked the Onicha Ngwa community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, where a man allegedly set fire to himself, his wife, and their children in a suspected act of revenge over infidelity.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., when 40-year-old Udochi Amala reportedly doused his home in flames, trapping his wife, Amarachi Amala, and their three children inside. The fire claimed the life of their one-year-old daughter and left the rest of the family with serious burn injuries.
Residents say Udochi, who lives in Amapuihe village in Osisioma Local Government Area, had accused his wife of being unfaithful, although he later admitted that he never caught her in any compromising situation. After carrying out the attack, he is said to have attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended by members of the community.
Emergency services rushed the victims to receive treatment, but the infant could not survive the severity of her injuries.
The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the incident and indicated that a full investigation is underway. Meanwhile, the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Abia has expressed grave concern over the disturbing act. The organization condemned the attack as a gross violation of human rights and an alarming example of gender-based violence.
Authorities are continuing to gather information, while residents and rights groups are calling for swift justice and better protection for women and children at risk of domestic violence.
