Only 2 Women in Mahama’s 19-Member Cabinet – Bagbin Demands Change
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has criticized the low representation of women in President John Mahama’s cabinet, describing it as inadequate and disappointing.
Speaking at an event in Parliament to mark International Women’s Day, he underscored the importance of ensuring that leadership positions reflect gender balance.
Expressing concern over the issue, he pointed out that out of 19 cabinet ministers, only two are women—far below the required 30% benchmark set by the Affirmative Action Gender Equality Act. He also highlighted the fact that just four out of the 43 parliamentary committees are led by women, exposing a wider gender gap in governance.
His remarks add to ongoing demands from gender advocates and civil society organizations calling for better female representation in decision-making roles. Bagbin urged Parliament to take a proactive approach by reviewing its leadership structures to align with the principles of the Affirmative Action law.
He further called for the immediate implementation of the law, emphasizing that delays should not be followed by a weak commitment to its enforcement. His appeal is seen as a crucial step in pushing for policies that promote gender equality in Ghana’s political and governance system.
