OpenAI has rolled out a new low-cost subscription package called ChatGPT Go, available only in India, in a strategic move to cement its grip on one of its fastest-growing markets. The plan, introduced on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, is priced at just ₹399 ($4.57) per month, making it the company’s most affordable offering to date.
India, home to nearly a billion internet users, is known as a price-sensitive market where tech giants often launch special budget plans. OpenAI appears to be following that path, hoping to expand its reach among everyday users while competing with other global AI providers.
Subscribers to ChatGPT Go gain access to ten times more messages and image generations compared to the free plan, alongside faster response times. The company noted that usage limits increase with higher-tier packages, offering flexibility for different types of users.
Currently, OpenAI’s premium subscriptions in India include ChatGPT Plus at ₹1,999 per month and ChatGPT Pro at ₹19,900 per month, placing the new Go plan in a significantly more accessible price bracket.
The decision comes months after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with India’s IT Minister, where discussions centered on creating a low-cost AI ecosystem tailored for the country. Altman has also hinted that India, already OpenAI’s second-largest market after the U.S., could soon become its biggest user base.
