Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has reaffirmed that the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is proceeding as planned, dismissing reports suggesting obstacles or delays. He confirmed that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is working closely with the Attorney General’s office to ensure all legal processes are meticulously followed for Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana.

Despite Ofori-Atta holding US citizenship, the OSP clarified that this does not prevent extradition. The Special Prosecutor emphasized that the process is moving forward, and speculation or misinformation will not derail the efforts to bring the former minister to face justice.

Ofori-Atta and five other former government officials are expected to be formally charged by the end of November 2025 following an investigation into alleged corruption and financial irregularities tied to contracts between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML). Investigators found that the contracts had no genuine justification and involved breaches of procurement laws, conflicts of interest, and unjustified payments.

The former Finance Minister was first identified as a suspect in January 2025 in multiple corruption-related cases, including irregularities with SML contracts, expenditures linked to the National Cathedral project, and issues with health and tax refund operations. He was declared a fugitive in February 2025 after repeatedly failing to honor OSP summonses. Although his lawyers requested removal from the wanted list, Ofori-Atta again failed to appear in June 2025, prompting reinstatement of his fugitive status and an Interpol Red Notice.

Ten months after being first declared a fugitive, Ofori-Atta has neither been arrested in the United States nor voluntarily returned to Ghana. The OSP maintains that the extradition and prosecution processes will continue until justice is served.
