Otumfuo Condemns Lobbying for IGP Position by Senior Police Officers

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has chided senior police officers for the chronic upscale in lobbying for the police chief position.

His Majesty says he is credibly informed of the attempts to politicise the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The Asantehene intimated during a visit to the Police Headquarters that some officers ignore laid-down processes, resorting to political tactics such as lobbying to earn positions.

The King condemned the act, saying it would erode the independence and freedom needed in the Ghana Police Service.

“When government changes, I hear some people lobbying to take a position when there is an incumbent IGP. Let us do it properly. Let’s stop that and accept that the senior and more qualified will take over”

Despite this, Otumfuo stated that he had President John Dramani Mahama’s assurance that the proper procedures would be followed.

“With the current president, I’m assured that there will be no interference. It will go through the process, and whoever is qualified will take over.”
