Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate, has been defended by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who refutes accusations of conceit made against him.
In a speech at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo expressed shock at the criticism, pointing to his own involvement in raising Napo and teaching him socially acceptable behavior.
“Some people claim that you are arrogant, and I was wondering why they were saying that because you were brought up with socially acceptable manners,” Otumfuo said, putting Napo under pressure to prove his detractors incorrect.
“Keep it from being real.”
The NPP ticket is greatly bolstered by the Asantehene’s support and defense of Napo as they prepare for the next elections. In contrast to the accusations of arrogance, Otumfuo has attested to Napo’s humility and manner by sharing his personal experience with his character.
Today, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was at the palace to introduce the flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh officially to the King of the Asante Kingdom.
In recent times, especially since Ghanaians got a hint that Napo will be the running mate of Bawumia, people have made claims that he is arrogant. It will be recalled that even when Ghanaians were demanding that the Electricity Company of Ghana release a dumsor timetable, Napo told Ghanaians to prepare their own timetable.
The Asantehene’s remarks have great political and cultural weight in Ghana, therefore this move is expected to benefit both the Napo public image and the NPP campaign.
