The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has given the Queen of the Agona Traditional Area, Nana Acheampomaa Ntansa Yiadom, the green light to select a candidate to ascend the vacant male stool.
The approval was granted on May 4, 2026, during a meeting of the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace.
The Queen and the kingmakers have been given two weeks to complete the necessary processes and present the nominee to the Council.
Four-Year Delay
The enstoolment of a successor to the late Nana Frimpong Anokye Ababio has stalled for almost four years.
A faction of Agona royals, who have been barred from the stool, objected to the process and invoked the Great Oath against the Queen.
Otumfuo’s directive now clears the way for the selection process to proceed.
Plea for Nullification
The barred royals in July 2025 submitted a plea for the ban to be lifted.
The plea was presented through the Tepahene, Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem.
As a condition for considering the plea, Otumfuo directed the Tepahene to engage the group and retrieve the Komfo Anokye Amoampong deity they had seized, revealing they had plotted to keep the deity in their domain if they failed to get one of their members enstooled as Agonahene.
“You have erred. You haven’t apologised, and yet you are fighting over a stool. You are apologising and yet you haven’t restored the property you seized, where is the remorse?”
Failed Recovery Effort
Reporting to the Council on Monday, the Tepahene said efforts to recover the stool had failed.
According to him, the group had denied being in possession of it.
“They insisted that the stool is not with them. As a result, I withdraw myself from the case,” Nana Atwenewa Ampem told Otumfuo and the Council.
Otumfuo’s Decision
After tracing the genealogy of the Agona stool, Otumfuo rebuked the group for their condemnable conduct.
His Majesty then directed the Agonahemaa to proceed with selecting a candidate and performing the rites for his enstoolment.
