On April 26, 1999, Barima Kwaku Duah ascended the Golden Stool as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, becoming the 16th Asantehene and succeeding Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.
His Majesty assumed the stool name Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the same as the founder of the Asante Kingdom. From that moment, the appellation ‘Ababio’, meaning ‘He Has Come Again’, was added to his name to signify the return of the founder’s spirit and mission.
‘Ababio’ was not a mere tag. It was manifested in the multifaceted reign of the King, whose second coming became imperative as the Kingdom, in various jurisdictions, was battered by chieftaincy conflicts, estranged paramountcies, and eroded traditions.
Right away, Otumfuo set out on a reordering and reclamation mission, leveraging peacebuilding and peacemaking as his foremost tools.
Conflict Resolution
In 27 years, Otumfuo has successfully resolved protracted stool disputes that once threatened Asante cohesion.
These include the nine-year Bekwai Stool conflict, the 13-year Tepa Stool dispute, the 11-year Tafo Stool dispute, the 13-year Adontenhene Stool dispute, the 11-year Antoa Stool dispute, the 23-year Effiduase Stool dispute, and many others.
Restoring Tradition and Order
In the realm of Asante custom, the King has righted wrongs in the traditional use of regalia, the enstoolment of chiefs, the handling of sacrilege, the observance of rites and rituals, and the management of stool properties, among others.
His reforms have reaffirmed the sanctity of Asante traditions while adapting them for contemporary relevance.
Reclaiming Prodigal Paramountcies
At the forefront of reconciliation and reclamation, Otumfuo has successfully reintegrated several prodigal Asante paramountcies and sub-stools that had either broken away or lost their bearing.
Notable among them is Worawora in the Oti Region, which was brought back under Asanteman’s authority.
At the last Asanteman Council meeting on April 17, 2026, Otumfuo reaffirmed his resolve to protect what belongs to the Golden Stool: “It is my duty to hold Asanteman together. No part of it will be lost under my watch.”
Development and Global Influence
Over the past 27 years of his reign, Otumfuo has championed education, peace, social cohesion, and development.
Through the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, thousands of students have received scholarships, while health, water, and sanitation projects have reached communities across Ghana.
His reign has blended tradition with modernity, diplomacy with development, and chieftaincy with global influence.
From brokering peace in Dagbon and Bawku to engaging world leaders and multilateral institutions, the Asantehene has projected Asanteman onto the global stage.
In word and deed, Otumfuo Osei Tutu Ababio has lived up to his name — restoring the Kingdom’s prestige, unity, and purpose for a new generation.
