Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Asante Kingdom, has reinstated the former Queen of Mpasaaso No. 2, decades after she was wrongfully removed from her position.
Her reinstatement, announced on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Kumasi Traditional Council, followed the destoolment of Nana Amofa Twumasi II, the former chief of Mpasaaso No. 2, who was found guilty of perjury and other offenses.
The ousted queen’s removal dates back to the reign of Asantehene Opoku Ware II. Since then, Mpasaaso No. 2 had been without a female leader, leaving a crucial gap in the traditional governance of the town.
Nana Twumasi, who ruled for 41 years, had claimed she was deposed due to insubordination and disrespect. However, Otumfuo revealed that her real offense was questioning the legitimacy of the chief, who was later found to have no royal lineage.
Nana Twumasi admitted during the hearing that his attempt to replace the queen had been blocked when a young man invoked the Great Oath, a sacred tradition that prevented him from enstooling another candidate. This left the female stool vacant for decades.
However, it was revealed that the queen’s removal was largely fueled by her opposition to the chief, particularly her insistence that he was not a true royal.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, after deposing the chief, restored the queen to her rightful place. He further instructed her to oversee the selection of a new chief through proper traditional procedures.
With this ruling, the Asantehene not only corrected a historical injustice but also reaffirmed his commitment to upholding truth and fairness in chieftaincy affairs.
