The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Botchwey, has credited the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for her appointment.

According to her, His Majesty’s intervention was decisive in securing her current role.

“My visit is all thanks to Nana. Otumfuo’s voice put me in my current seat,” she said during a visit to the Manhyia Palace on May 8, 2026.

Botchwey explained that she had earlier attempted to personally thank the Asantehene, but was unable to do so as the President of Seychelles was visiting at the time.

“I came earlier to offer my thanks, but at the time, the President of Seychelles was here, so I didn’t get the chance to convey my appreciation as I wanted to. I am happy for the opportunity today and wish him a happy birthday.”

She described the Asantehene as a global treasure whose wisdom should be sought beyond Ghana and Africa.

“My wish is that your wisdom become known worldwide and sought after worldwide. Not just in Asanteman, Ghana, and Africa, because you are a treasure to the world and must be unveiled to the world.”

Botchwey also expressed gratitude for being named Guest of Honour at the Asantehene’s birthday celebration.

“I was very honoured to be the Guest of Honour. It was all about you, but you included me in your speech. God bless you, Nana.”

Confidence
Responding, Otumfuo said he supported Botchwey because of her track record as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

“All thanks belong to God. I had faith in her because I had followed her keenly during her tenure as Minister for Foreign Affairs. She was respectful and humble. She didn’t misuse her authority in government, and she was hardworking. Such is the person we support and trust to deliver.”

The Asantehene said her success was a result of her knowledge, humility, and diligence.

“By the grace of God, she succeeded. Her knowledge and humility took her there. I am confident she will bring honour to us. I will support her with prayers.”

Shirley Botchwey assumed office as Commonwealth Secretary-General in April 2025, becoming the first Ghanaian and the second African woman to hold the position.

She succeeded Patricia Scotland and oversees the 56-member organisation’s agenda on democracy, trade, and development.
