Over 5,000 Delegates Converge in Accra as NPP Plots Comeback

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is assembling thousands of its members in Accra this weekend for a pivotal two-day Annual Delegates Conference aimed at revitalising its structure and policies following its loss in the 2024 general elections.

Set against the theme “Rebuilding together with our values,” the event, taking place from July 19 to 20 at the University of Ghana Stadium, is expected to attract more than 5,500 delegates. Discussions will centre on proposed constitutional reforms, accountability from leadership, and preparations for upcoming internal elections.

Despite legal efforts by two members to halt the gathering, the Party announced it had not been formally served with any injunction and was moving forward with the scheduled programme.

A visit to the venue by the Ghana News Agency on Friday confirmed that final arrangements were in full swing. Party representatives were seen actively coordinating logistics inside and around the stadium, while security personnel handled access control and surveillance.

The stadium’s surroundings were adorned with imagery of the Party’s key figures, past and present. NPP colours—red, white, and blue—were prominently displayed across walls and lamp posts. Enforcement of a strict directive from the Elections Committee was evident, as no posters or billboards promoting presidential aspirants were seen.

Speaking to the media, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye stressed that the Party would take a firm stance on maintaining neutrality at the venue, warning that any unauthorized displays would not be tolerated. He confirmed that the police had been briefed to ensure safety and that only properly accredited individuals would be granted access to the event.

One of the most significant proposals to be reviewed during the Conference comes from the Frank Davies Committee, which is advocating for a broader delegate base in the selection of the Party’s next presidential candidate. The committee believes that expanding the voting pool will reduce vote-buying and enhance inclusivity in the internal democratic process. Approval of the measure would require a two-thirds majority to amend Article 19 of the NPP constitution.

The Party has already fixed January 31, 2026, for its next presidential primary, a decision finalised by the National Council during a National Executive Committee meeting held on June 17, 2025. That date will remain unchanged and is not up for reconsideration during the current Conference.

Reports from both the National Chairman and General Secretary will also be presented, providing a full account of the Party’s activities and strategic moves over the past year—including a review of the 2024 election outcome.
