The Kinbu Aayalolo Bus Terminal, a vital hub in Accra’s public transport system, has turned into a battleground after a group of self-proclaimed “party boys” took control of the facility, sparking a confrontation with state security forces.

Once a key part of the Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network designed to reduce congestion in the capital, the terminal has been illegally occupied since the December elections. Reports from the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) indicate that the facility was seized by individuals claiming connections to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the National Democratic Congress.

For nearly ten months, the group has converted the once-busy terminal into a private parking and cargo distribution point, where they collect daily tolls without any record of accountability. Despite losing access to the terminal, GAPTE continues to cover the cost of electricity, water, and maintenance, creating what officials describe as a major operational crisis.

The illegal occupation has caused severe deterioration of the premises. Cargo trucks now dominate the terminal, making it nearly impossible for the large Aayalolo buses to move freely. The area has also become a haven for miscreants and drug addicts, with rising reports of theft, poor sanitation, and public defecation. Several bus parts have reportedly gone missing, worsening the situation for the transport service.

Tensions reached their peak on November 10, 2025, when National Security operatives were deployed to the terminal in an attempt to restore order. However, their presence was fiercely resisted by the occupiers, who openly declared that they were “party boys” seeking to survive — a statement seen as a direct challenge to government authority.

The standoff has reignited concerns about the growing influence of politically connected vigilante groups and the risk they pose to public infrastructure. Meanwhile, commuters relying on the Aayalolo service from terminals in Adenta, Achimota, Ofankor, and Amasaman continue to face disruption as the Kinbu terminal remains under illegal control.

With the situation worsening and state intervention proving difficult, transport authorities and the public are calling for immediate government action to reclaim the terminal, restore operations, and prevent the escalating chaos from spiraling into a full-blown security crisis.
