Pastor Claims Jesus Made Himself Poor So Christians Shouldn't Associate with Poverty

Controversial Nigerian pastor, David Ibiyeomie, has once again sparked public debate with his bold statement that believers should not associate with the poor.

During his recent sermon, Ibiyeomie claimed that this view had been confirmed to him by the Holy Spirit, further reinforcing his belief that poverty should be avoided just like sin.

According to Ibiyeomie, Jesus’ sacrifice of becoming poor was to ensure that his followers could be rich, implying that poverty is not a state that Christians should embrace.

He likened mixing with the poor to associating with sinners, stating that both should elicit anger in believers.

He pointed out that while Christians are called to help the poor, they should not live in close association with them, as doing so contradicts the message of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

His message went on to emphasize that poverty is a mindset, not a financial state, and that just because someone lacks money doesn’t mean they are poor in spirit.

Ibiyeomie’s remarks have been met with mixed reactions, with some agreeing with his perspective while others accuse him of promoting materialism and lacking empathy for the disadvantaged.
