Elizabeth Acquah, also known as “Yaa Lizzy,” has been arrested by the Western Central Regional DOVVSU Command after allegedly publishing false information online that caused widespread fear.
The incident centers on a dispute between 22-year-old Joseph Cann and his 20-year-old girlfriend, Felicia Ofori Atta, while traveling from Tarkwa to Bogoso on November 2, 2025. During the journey, the couple had a disagreement and stopped in the Yareyeya community to resolve the matter.
According to police, Elizabeth Acquah, who was among a group of mourners attending a funeral nearby, confronted Cann and falsely accused him of kidnapping his girlfriend. She reportedly assaulted him while recording videos of the couple and their vehicle, which she later shared online, claiming a child had been abducted. The videos quickly circulated and sparked panic among the public.
A formal complaint was lodged by Cann at the DOVVSU office on November 17, 2025, prompting the arrest of Elizabeth. The police have emphasized that spreading unverified or false information on social media constitutes a criminal offense and have warned the public against sharing misleading content.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Beatrice Turkson, Head of Public Affairs for the Western-Central Region, stated that authorities are taking the case seriously and anyone found responsible for disseminating false news will face legal consequences.
