The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has dispatched two armoured vehicles along with personnel from the National Police Operations to Nkwanta in the Oti region.
This is in a bid to strengthen security following a series of violent attacks in the area. The deployment took place last night, and calm has since been restored.
Tensions escalated this week in the Nkwanta enclave following the killing of three individuals linked to the ongoing local conflict.
The victims, identified as 77-year-old Nana Achinake Iddrisu, 24-year-old Fusheni Achinake, and 17-year-old Nuhu Achinake, were reportedly attacked while working on their farm and burnt beyond recognition.
The latest incident has heightened fear among residents, forcing many to flee the area as the security situation continues to deteriorate.
According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service, a combined team comprising officers from the Police, Military, Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), Defence Intelligence, and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) recovered five bodies from two separate locations within the Nkwanta South Municipality. The deceased include three males and two females.
“Five (5) identified dead bodies of three (3) males and two (2) females have been recovered from two separate locations in the Nkwanta South Municipality by a joint team of the Police, Military, the BNI, the Defence Intelligence and GNFS personnel,” the statement read.
The authorities have launched investigations to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the violent incidents and to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Residents of Nkwanta and surrounding communities have been urged to remain calm and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing any relevant information that may assist with the ongoing investigations.
The public has also been cautioned against spreading misinformation or engaging in acts that could incite further tensions or unrest.
“The people of Nkwanta and its immediate environs are urged to remain calm and to cooperate with security agencies by providing any relevant information that may assist with the ongoing investigations.”
The Ghana Police Service remains committed to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of all citizens in the region.
“The public is further urged to desist from misinformation and acts that have the potential to flare up passions,” the statement concluded.
