The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti South Region has intercepted and seized a substantial consignment of prohibited drugs at the Tweapease Police barrier on the Obuasi–Dunkwa highway.
According to a press release issued on Monday, February 16, officers from the Obuasi Division made the interception on February 13, 2026, during a routine operation at the barrier.
The seized consignment comprised 257 packs of 50mg tramadol, 58 packs of 250mg tramadol—commonly referred to as “Red”—and 58 packs of 225mg tapentadol, also known as “Royal”.
The drugs were reportedly being transported on a red OA Kia Grandbird bus en route to Ayamfuri, near Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region.
Police officers conducted a search of the vehicle after stopping it at the barrier and discovered two sealed brown boxes containing the assorted drugs.
The driver of the bus, 37-year-old Joseph Nkrumah, was immediately arrested. During interrogation, he allegedly identified a woman named Perpetual, said to be a native of Ayamfuri, as the owner of the consignment.
The following day, February 14, 2026, while investigations were ongoing, the alleged owner of the drugs, together with three other individuals—Diana Mensah, 40; Abena Neyea, 43; and Nana Akua, 35—reportedly appeared at the same Tweapease barrier.
According to the police statement, the group arrived with GH¢50,000 in cash in an alleged attempt to bribe officers handling the case.
The police retained the money for evidential purposes and immediately arrested Perpetual and the three others to assist with further investigations.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, 16 February 2026. They will face charges under the Public Health Act, 2012, specifically provisions relating to the prohibited sale of drugs, herbal medicinal products, cosmetics, medical devices and other household chemical substances.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to clamping down on the illegal drug trade within its jurisdiction.
The Command cautioned individuals involved in criminal activities to steer clear of the region, stating that the Ashanti South terrain would prove “very hostile” to those engaged in unlawful enterprises.
