The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has dismantled a highway robbery syndicate, arresting 12 suspects linked to a string of violent attacks across the region and beyond.
The arrests were executed in coordinated operations on March 12 and 14, 2026, spanning several towns including Offinso, Nkenkaasu, Akomadan, Techiman, and Sunyani. The operation, a collaboration between the regional command and the Police Intelligence Directorate’s Surveillance Unit in Accra, targeted a group that had allegedly terrorized motorists on major highways.
Parading the suspects on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the Regional Police Headquarters in Asante Mampong, Ashanti North Regional Commander, ACP Felix Apedo, revealed a gallery of hardened criminals. Among those in custody are Seidu Fuseini, alias Baali, an ex-convict released in 2022; Dramani Rasak, 22, who is currently out on bail for a murder case in Kumasi; Moro Yakubu, also known as Dogo, an ex-convict; and Ibrahim Issiaka, 28, alias Jaaji, who escaped from the Jaima Police Station.
The police recovered an arsenal from the suspects, including three locally manufactured shotguns, a locally made pistol, nine live BB cartridges, four cutlasses, a sword, and two knives. Investigators also seized 41 mobile phones—some of which have already been identified by robbery victims—seven phone covers, three black hooded outfits (one stained with blood), and a fertilizer bag used to conceal the weapons.
ACP Apedo detailed the syndicate’s alleged reign of terror, citing a February 23, 2026, attack at about 4:20 a.m. on the Nsuta–Hwidiem Old Junction Road, where armed men wielding shotguns and cutlasses made off with GH¢57,000 and mobile phones. In a revealing detail, the commander noted that suspect Zakaria Fuseini initially refused to participate in one robbery due to Islamic fasting but later accepted GH¢500 as his share of the spoils.
The group is also accused of attacking a VIP bus carrying 49 passengers on February 2, 2026, along the Nkenkaasu–Darso stretch of the Kumasi–Techiman highway, where two female passengers sustained gunshot wounds. Police further disclosed that the suspects were planning another attack on March 14 along the Akomadan–Darso road, a plot foiled by their arrests that same day.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to a litany of other crimes, including robberies on the Mampong–Ejura road, at Offinso Kokoti, in Wenchi during the 2025 Sallah festivities, and even a cattle theft in the Buipe area of the Northern Region. They also allegedly participated in an incident in Obuasi where a fellow suspect was killed in a shootout with police.
ACP Apedo confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend two other accomplices who remain at large and appealed to the public to provide credible information to aid the fight against armed robbery.
