The Ghana Police Service has arrested ten individuals accused of running a sophisticated online fraud scheme that posed as legitimate food delivery services to extort money from unsuspecting customers.
According to the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Cybercrime Unit, the arrests were the result of weeks of intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling cyber fraud networks preying on the public.
The first group of six suspects — identified as Wonder Sakpiti, Sedinam Amaglo, Godsway Dunyo, Angela Agblemekpe, Mathew Aheto, and Fafali Amoah — were picked up in Sogakope, Volta Region, on October 1, 2025.
Investigations uncovered that the group had created fake websites and social media pages pretending to represent top Ghanaian and international fast-food brands such as Papaye, Pizzaman, KFC, and Mawarko. Customers who placed food orders through these pages were instructed to make advance payments via mobile money, only to realize later that their food would never arrive.
Police reports also indicate that in some cases, the fraudsters went a step further — allegedly tricking victims into granting them access to their mobile money and bank accounts under the pretext of helping them complete payments, before withdrawing funds illegally.
The operation later expanded to Accra, where police apprehended the alleged ringleader, Elijah Sotama Etse, known as Pop Smoke, along with three associates — Elliot Sotama Atsu, Jethro Atsu, and Obed Selasi Agboli — at a hideout in Haatso on October 12, 2025.
During the raid, 12 mobile phones believed to have been used for the fraudulent activities were confiscated and sent for forensic examination.
All ten suspects are currently in police custody and were arraigned before court on Monday, October 13, 2025.
The Police Service has urged members of the public who may have fallen victim to similar scams to report to the nearest police station and assist with ongoing investigations.
