A police officer in Anambra State has drawn widespread criticism after reportedly firing a shot to puncture a truck’s tyre, following the driver’s refusal to pay a bribe. The incident unfolded at the heavily trafficked Onitsha Head Bridge, causing a significant disruption.
The conflict began when the truck driver declined to comply with the officer’s demand for a bribe. In response, the officer allegedly discharged a firearm, hitting one of the vehicle’s tyres. This aggressive act immediately infuriated other truck drivers in the area, who subsequently blocked the roadway in protest.
The resulting standstill lasted several hours, leading to severe traffic congestion on the vital bridge. The standoff only ended after the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) intervened, reportedly purchasing a replacement tyre for the affected truck driver in an effort to defuse tensions and restore order.
The episode quickly gained attention online, with many Nigerians expressing shock over the blatant abuse of authority and the disruption caused. The incident has sparked renewed conversations about police conduct and demands for accountability within the force.
