Police recover five assault rifles after Bono shootout, one suspect killed

The Ghana Police Service says five assorted firearms have been recovered following an intelligence-led operation against suspected robbery gangs in the Bono Region, which resulted in the death of one suspect after a shootout.

In a press release dated February 17, 2026, the Bono Regional Police Command said police intelligence on February 11 indicated that a robbery gang was planning to attack traders along the Dormaa–Gonokrom highway.

Surveillance teams were immediately deployed to prevent the intended robbery.

According to the police, in the early hours of February 12, officers advancing near a parked motorbike came under gunfire from nearby bushes.

Police returned fire, and a subsequent search at daybreak led to the discovery of one male suspect dead, with an AK-47 rifle found beside him.

A further search in the area resulted in the recovery of a sack containing additional weapons and ammunition.

These included two Baikal single-barrel guns, a pump-action gun, a Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition, 34 additional rounds of 9mm ammunition, another AK-47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds, 10 additional rounds of ammunition, 39 BB cartridges, as well as a dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black mask and a set of talisman.

Police said the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.

The Bono Regional Police Command has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the remaining members of the gang.

It also appealed to the public to provide credible information that could assist in bringing those involved in criminal activities to justice.

The Command reiterated its commitment to working tirelessly to enhance safety and security across the Bono Region.
