Police reject GH¢69,000 bribe in major drug interception in Western Region

The Western Regional Police Command has rejected a GH¢69,000 bribe allegedly offered by suspects linked to two truckloads of a substance believed to be Indian hemp intercepted at the Assokor Barrier in the Shama Municipality.

According to the police, the attempted inducement was made after officers stopped the vehicles during a routine inspection and discovered large quantities of the suspected narcotic substance.

In a Channel One TV news report on Monday, February 23, 2026, the Head of Public Affairs of the Western Regional Police Command, Superintendent of Police Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, confirmed that the suspects tried to use money to secure the release of an accomplice.

“Two of the suspects brought GH₵69,000 in an attempt to offer it to the police to negotiate the release of their colleague. However, the police rejected the bribe and arrested them as well.

“This morning, the truck was offloaded, and about 152 big bales of substances were found inside. Each bale contained approximately 82 pieces of compressed suspected Indian hemp wrapped in yellow packaging,” she is quoted to have said.

She explained that the operation began when officers intercepted the first truck at the Asokwe Police barrier in Shama.

Although three individuals initially fled the scene, one suspect was arrested and later led police to a second vehicle parked at Nkrofo Junction.

“The first truck was arrested at the Asokwe, Shama Police barrier by officers on duty. Three people initially absconded, but police managed to arrest one of them. The suspect then led officers to a second vehicle, which was parked at Nkrofo Junction. In total, three people have been arrested,” she added.
