Nigerian music star Portable recently made an unusual claim that one doesn’t need to be fluent in English to secure a visa, recounting his own experiences of traveling to the UK and Canada despite not being well-versed in the language.
In an interview on the Echo Room, Portable shared that his travels to the UK for a music video shoot with Skepta and to Canada for a tour were achieved without the need for perfect English.
He explained that all he had to do was express his intentions clearly at the embassy and answer questions when asked, dismissing language fluency as unnecessary for visa approval.
While he acknowledged that he does speak English when it comes to financial matters, his comments raised eyebrows and sparked a debate.
Many found his perspective amusing, while others took the opportunity to point out the importance of language skills in international communication.
Some defended him, joking that it’s the balance in his bank account that truly speaks for him.
This conversation has drawn a variety of reactions, with some praising his straightforwardness, while others continue to highlight the role of English in global travel and visa processes.
