Political scientist Dr Kwame Asah Asante has described recent post-primary tensions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as “unfortunate.”

He warned that the development comes at a time when the party’s flagbearer needs total unity to effectively prepare for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Dr Asah Asante said the situation was the “last thing” the party should be dealing with, stressing that internal divisions could weaken the NPP’s electoral fortunes if not urgently addressed.

“At this time, the flagbearer needs nothing but everybody on board to have a formidable team to prosecute the 2028 electioneering agenda. What has happened is unfortunate,” he said.

His comments follow concerns raised by members of the Kennedy Agyapong camp, who have questioned the sincerity of ongoing reconciliation efforts and alleged victimisation of some party members after Dr Bawumia’s victory in the NPP’s presidential primary.

The political scientist called on the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to immediately take decisive steps to heal the cracks within the party by establishing a neutral body to oversee reconciliation efforts.

He explained that such a body, operating with Dr Bawumia’s full support and blessing, would help resolve grievances and bring back members who feel sidelined or victimised due to their association with rival camps during the party’s internal contest.

“Everybody who has been hurt, or criticised for belonging to another camp, should be brought home to see themselves as one family with a common destiny and a common cause,” he stated.
