The President, John Dramani Mahama, has assured the people of Yilo Krobo in the Eastern Region that his government will continue to provide the needed infrastructure for the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) located at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality to produce graduates who help can protect the environment.
He said the university, which has its core values of honesty, opportunity, perseverance and enterprising (HOPE) to produce persons who have hope in themselves and were poised to give hope to the world with their knowledge and work ethic, was the very best for the nation and therefore needed infrastructure to deliver on its mandate.
Inspection tour
The President gave the assurance during a brief visit to the university last Saturday to inspect ongoing projects.
He was accompanied by the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, the Economic Advisor to the President, Seth Terkper, who is also the current Chairman of the university’s council, the Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo, Francis Akumatey Addo, the NDC Party Chairman for Yilo Krobo, Eric Keteku Odzryem, the Deputy Chairman, Jonas Tetteh Numo, and other government officials from both the Presidency and the Regional Coordinating Council.
President Mahama said he was satisfied with the stages of ongoing projects, some of which he would inaugurate in October, while others would be done early next year.
“I have come to see the levels of developmental projects ongoing in the university, of which I am satisfied. I shall come back in October to inaugurate some and others early next year.
“Thank you very much for having faith and trust in the government,” he said.
The UESD is a public-funded institution that was established by an Act of Parliament, the UESD Act 2015 ( 898), during the time of President Mahama’s first term in office and was inaugurated on August 5, 2020.
Appreciation
The acting President of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Council, Nene Amoatey Akpatsu Vl, on behalf of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Council and the people of the traditional area, thanked the President for the confidence reposed in their sons and daughters in his government.
“Your recognition of the Krobo people in your administration is unprecedented and will go a long way in advancing the development of our community.
These appointments have not only acknowledged the competence and dedication of our people but have also strengthened our sense of belonging and participation in national governance.
“Mr President, we also appreciate the various developmental initiatives you have undertaken in our community.
It was under your administration that land was acquired for the construction of this beautiful university on Krobo land.
“Your return as President for your second term to continue the facelift of the structures demonstrates your commitment and passion for the development of our area,” he said.
He recalled that the President personally acquired the land and cut the sod for the construction of the Yilo Krobo District Hospital.
That visionary step, he said, had significantly enhanced access to quality health care and brought renewed hope to the people.
He, however, complained about the Somanya-Kpong road, which is currently under construction but is taking too long, thus affecting economic activities as well as the safety and well being of the people.
He, therefore, appealed to the President to re-award the contract to ensure its early completion.
He also appealed to the President for the establishment of mango and cement factories in the area because they produce most of the mangoes in the country, as well as limestone for cement production.
Such initiative, he said, would significantly boost employment and economic growth to the credit of his administration.
