President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s (GBC) role in national development, stating that the corporation’s reach and language diversity enable it to connect with Ghanaians across the country.
Speaking during a meeting with GBC management, headed by Director-General Professor Amin Alhassan, President Mahama noted that GBC’s content should prioritize public education, providing valuable information on issues like agriculture and health.
The President expressed support for GBC’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and operations, citing the need for alternative energy sources like solar power to reduce costs. He also acknowledged GBC’s proposals to improve operations and revenue mobilization, including reviewing the corporation’s outdated organogram.
President Mahama assured GBC management that his administration is committed to supporting the corporation, highlighting the importance of public media in promoting national unity and development. He noted that a strong public media is essential for a functioning democracy, and GBC has a critical role to play in this regard.
The President encouraged GBC to explore innovative funding models, to supplement its budgetary allocations. He also urged the corporation to prioritize content that promotes national cohesion and unity, while ensuring editorial independence.
President Mahama praised GBC’s efforts to introduce solar power and other cost-saving measures, stating that these initiatives would enable the corporation to allocate more resources to programming and content development. He expressed confidence that GBC would continue to serve as a leading voice in Ghana’s media landscape.
President Mahama also thanked GBC management for their dedication and commitment to public service, assuring them of his administration’s support.
