President John Dramani Mahama has charged Ghana’s newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioner-designate to safeguard and strengthen the country’s hard-won reputation as a stable, peaceful and responsible democratic nation, urging them to project Ghana as a dependable global partner.
Speaking at their swearing-in ceremony at Jubilee House on Monday, 9 February, President Mahama noted that Ghana’s standing as a strong and peaceful democracy was not accidental, but the product of decades of sacrifice and national consensus.
“Ghana’s strong reputation as a stable and peaceful democracy and a responsible nation is the result of decades of sacrifice and national consensus,” the President said. “You are entrusted with safeguarding and strengthening this reputation.”
He urged the appointees to consistently present Ghana as a dependable partner, a predictable destination for business and tourism, and a principled yet pragmatic voice in both regional and global affairs.
According to President Mahama, the conduct and engagement of Ghana’s diplomatic representatives play a critical role in sustaining international confidence in the country, particularly at a time when competition for investment, partnerships and influence is intensifying worldwide.
The President further highlighted Ghana’s historical roots in Pan-Africanism, describing the country’s foreign policy as one anchored in the belief that Africa must actively shape global outcomes rather than merely respond to them.
“As a nation shaped by the Pan-African vision of our founding leaders, Ghana’s foreign policy is anchored in the belief that Africa must help shape global outcomes, not merely react to them,” he stated.
President Mahama therefore called on the envoys to articulate a Ghanaian voice that speaks “with clarity, confidence and conviction”, in pursuit of an Africa that is respected, prosperous and united.
He urged them to advance Ghana’s interests while promoting African solidarity and cooperation, stressing that modern diplomacy demands both national focus and continental awareness.
