Prophet Bernard Elbernard Nelson-Eshun has publicly apologised after his widely publicised prophecy predicting victory for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary failed to materialise, as the party conducted a closely contested internal election to select its next flagbearer.
The NPP primary, which brought together five high-profile aspirants, including former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, saw 211,849 delegates voting nationwide.
As provisional results began to clarify the direction of the race, Prophet Nelson-Eshun issued a statement acknowledging that his earlier declaration, made through books, videos and media interviews, was inaccurate.
In the statement titled “Public Statement & Apology”, he admitted that his prophecy naming Mr Agyapong as the eventual winner had not come to pass.
“That word did not come to pass. I missed it. I was wrong, I am deeply sorry, and I ask for your forgiveness,” he stated.
The prophet said he spoke with what he described as prophetic authority, which caused many people to place trust in his declaration. He conceded that the prophecy had consequences for individuals who were emotionally, spiritually and politically influenced by it.
“I take full responsibility for this prophetic word,” he said, stressing that he was not blaming anyone else or attempting to justify the failed prediction.
Prophet Nelson-Eshun further apologised to supporters who may have taken decisions based on his prophecy, acknowledging the disappointment and hurt caused. He said the episode had forced him to reflect deeply on accountability and discernment in communicating prophetic revelations.
The apology comes at a time when political discourse around the NPP primaries has intensified, with the role of religious commentary and prophecy in electoral processes once again drawing public attention.
While the prophet reaffirmed his commitment to integrity and truth, the episode has reignited debate about the influence of spiritual declarations on Ghana’s democratic culture.
