The public has been advised to acquire and use fire extinguishers as a first resort during a fire outbreak.
Fireman, Emmanuel Quayson, who gave the advice, said the firefighting tool remained an essential commodity for households and workplaces.
He was speaking at an educational session on fire extinguisher use for members of God Needs You Evangelical Ministries, at Nungua, Greater Accra Region.
The sensitisation programme was organised by the Christian organisation as part of activities for the Easter celebrations.
It was facilitated by officers of the Ghana National Fire Service.
The participants were taken through practical demonstrations on how to operate fire extinguishers and also respond quickly to minor fire incidents before they escalate.
The fire safety education formed part of a broader Easter celebration, which included traditional cooking, praise and worship, games and a community food festival.
More than 500 church members and residents from the surrounding communities attended the event.
Significance
Mr Quayson, who led the session, also urged the public to stop treating fire extinguishers as decorative items, but instead, learn how to use them effectively during emergencies.
He observed that although many institutions and homes had installed fire extinguishers, people were still unable to use them when fire broke out.
The fireman further noted that many individuals had purchased fire extinguishers without consulting professionals, resulting in the acquisition of the equipment.
Appreciation
Founder and President of the church, Pastor Charles Mintah, expressed appreciation to the fire officers for the education and sensitisation on the use of fire extinguishers.
He said the church began five years ago with members worshipping in classrooms, but had since grown to establish a church auditorium capable of accommodating over one thousand worshippers.
Pastor Mintah disclosed that the church was working towards establishing schools to support the education and empowerment of young people in local communities.
For her part, the Women’s Ministry leader of the church, Grace Mintah, underscored the importance of empowering women to actively contribute to the development of society.
