An 11-year-old pupil at El-Shaddai International School in Accra has been reportedly left with serious bruises after a physical altercation with a teacher. The incident, which occurred at the Mabey campus between Agbogba and Haatso, has sparked public outrage and calls for stricter oversight of school discipline practices.
Reports indicate that the incident was triggered when the young boy picked up trash that had been discarded by a teacher and placed it under his desk. The teacher, reportedly named Iddrisu, allegedly reacted violently, assaulting the pupil to the point that bystanders feared for the child’s well-being. Another teacher intervened before the situation could worsen, preventing further injury.
The boy’s mother has raised concerns over the school’s handling of the matter, claiming that despite reporting the incident to the police, no decisive action has been taken against the teacher, who continues to work at the school. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the alleged assault is ongoing.
This case has reignited debate in Ghana over the use of corporal punishment in schools, with education stakeholders and parents demanding stricter safeguards to protect children from abuse. Community members are now urging the government and school administrators to ensure that the child receives medical attention and that disciplinary policies are reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
