Quaye Nungua R/C Basic School has been named the winner ot this year’s FanMilk School Caravan, an initiative dedicated to showcasing excellence in plastic waste collection and environmental education.

The school, which won the top spot after collecting 10,989 plastic wrappers for recycling, saw its ICT lab being refurbished by FanMilk.

The initiative aims to create a cleaner, more environmentally conscious generation, fostering a culture of recycling and environmental responsibility among students.

Quaye Nungua R/C Basic emerged victorious after leading a group of five top-performing schools across the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Western regions, each receiving a legacy project.

In Accra, Association Community Model Basic School took second place for collecting 9,485 wrappers and received a KG playground refurbishment, while Ashma Tsui-Bleoo No. 2 Basic placed third after collecting 8,905 wrappers with a new ICT lab.

In the Ashanti Region, Maakro M/A Basic won an ICT lab for collecting 9,186 wrappers, and in the Western Region, Windo Methodist School was rewarded with a renovated KG block for their efforts.

Rationale

The Managing Director (MD) of FanMilk Ghana, Lionel Parent, said his outfit believed that a snack was only truly enjoyed when its wrapper was safely disposed of in a recycling bin, adding, “We are proud of what these students have accomplished”.

He said the initiative went beyond simply collecting wrappers to instilling lifelong habits in schoolchildren.

“We at FanMilk are pleased to commission this ICT lab, which will support your learning, nurture your curiosity, and prepare you for the future.

“We hope it will provide you with the tools to explore, innovate, and solve the challenges around you,” he stated.

He said since its inception in 2018, the programme had reached over 500,000 students and collected a million wrappers, helping to foster a culture of responsibility in schools and communities.

In 2025, the MD said, the caravan activated over 1,000 schools across three regions: Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Western, reaching over 507,000 students and collecting more than 11.2 million wrappers.

The wrappers, he explained, were recycled in partnership with MiniPlast Ghana Limited and repurposed into bin liners, contributing to a circular approach to plastic waste management.

Partnership

The Technical Advisor, Pre-Tertiary, Ministry of Education, Stephen Kwaku Owusu, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Education, emphasised the significance of such partnerships in national development.

“What we are witnessing goes beyond a school competition.

These students are learning values that will shape their contributions to Ghana in the future.

“They are demonstrating that protecting the environment is a patriotic responsibility we must all take seriously.

We commend their courage in taking action to protect our environment,” he said.

The Head Teacher of Quaye Nungua R/C Basic School, Georgina Ahiagba, expressed gratitude for the recognition.

“This acknowledgement means a great deal to us as a school. Our students have demonstrated commitment and teamwork throughout this programme,” she added.
