Alhaji Seidu Agongo has strongly condemned the assault of a Class Media Group journalist by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), describing the incident as a disgrace to the discipline and core mandate of the Service.

In remarks issued on the matter, Alhaji Agongo expressed deep concern over what he called an “unfortunate and despicable” attack, following the circulation of videos showing uniformed firefighters beating an unarmed journalist. He said the conduct captured in the footage runs contrary to the values of law, order, and professionalism expected in a democratic society.

“The videos circulating are simply despicable,” he said, adding that such behaviour has no place in a country that prides itself on press freedom and respect for human rights.

Alhaji Agongo assured the assaulted journalist of full medical care and legal support, stressing that Class Media Group would stand firmly behind its employee to ensure justice is served. He also thanked fellow media organisations and concerned Ghanaians for speaking out against the incident.

While noting what he described as the “loud silence” of the GNFS management, Alhaji Agongo said he was confident the Ghana Police Service would act in line with its constitutional mandate. He therefore called for a thorough, impartial investigation and the public prosecution of those responsible.

He emphasized that the matter goes beyond one journalist, warning that failure to act decisively could undermine the rights of citizens and Ghana’s international reputation as a defender of press freedom.
