Rex Omar calls out govt for lack of support for artistes
Rex Omar has slammed the Ghanaian government for its lack of support for artistes in the music industry. In a scathing interview on Accra-based 3FM monitored by News & Vibes, Omar accused the government of neglecting its creatives and failing to provide the necessary resources and support for them to succeed.
Omar cited his own experiences, including a disappointing tour where he received minimal support from the government, as evidence of the systemic challenges facing artistes. He also lamented the lack of infrastructure and resources, such as studios and equipment, to help artistes produce quality music.
“The government doesn’t care about us,” Omar said. “They don’t see the value in what we do. We’re left to fend for ourselves, and it’s tough.”
Omar’s comments have sparked a heated debate in the industry, with many artistes sharing their own experiences and calling for government support. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture has responded, promising to engage with stakeholders to address the challenges facing the industry.
As the conversation continues, one thing is clear: Rex Omar’s call to action has resonated with many, and the government is under pressure to deliver support for Ghana’s creative industry.
Hiplife artiste, Rex Omar received two nominations: one for Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards in 2005, and another for a Kora award in 2004.
After his band disbanded, he rose to the position of President of the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO).
