Pupils of Kweiman Presbyterian Basic School in Accra now have access to a refurbished library following an intervention by the Rotary Club of Accra aimed at improving reading and learning conditions in the school.
The project involved upgrading the school’s existing library facility with new furniture, shelves and books to create a more conducive environment for pupils to read and study.
President of the Rotary Club of Accra, RP Samuel Thompson, said the initiative was undertaken after members of the club identified the need for improved learning facilities at the school.
“We are here to hand over a library that we refurbished for Kweiman Presbyterian Basic School. One of our members visited the school and realised there was a need.
“The school has many needs, so we decided to start by helping improve the learning environment,” he said.
Mr. Thompson added that the club is considering additional interventions to further support the school’s development.
District Governor of Rotary International District 9104, Nana Yaa Siriboe, said the project aligns with Rotary’s focus on promoting basic education and literacy.
“The Rotary Club of Accra identified a need to support the learners at Kweiman Basic School and decided to refurbish their library.
“Every child will now have the opportunity to visit the library during library periods to read and improve their vocabulary and knowledge,” she said.
Headmistress Mercy Aku Davodzi expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club for the support, explaining that the previous library space was too small to accommodate pupils during reading periods.
“The library was very small, so the learners could not enter during library time. They had to bring their chairs outside to read while the librarian guided them,” she said.
She also appealed for additional support, particularly for ICT facilities, noting that the school currently lacks computers for practical lessons.
Some pupils also expressed excitement about the refurbished facility, saying it will allow them to read more books and improve their learning.
