The Director of Field Operations for the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie Central with immediate effect, following revelations from a JoyNews Hotline documentary on illegal mining.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Monday, February 10, while discussing the investigative piece titled “A Tax for Galamsey: The Extortion Racket Fuelling Illegal Mining”, Mr Adorye insisted that decisive action was needed to deter others.
“Whether it is internally generated funds or whatever, I think the President must sack him with immediate effect. He must be removed just to deter others,” he stated.
According to Mr Adorye, the President has already emphasised the need to act decisively against individuals involved in illegal mining, and the evidence presented in the investigation leaves no room for delay.
He further called for sanctions to extend beyond the DCE, arguing that several state officials named in the investigation had failed in their responsibilities and should also be removed.
“Not the DCE alone. The NIB boss there should be fired. The National Security boss there should be fired. The NADMO boss there, who has been issuing bills—‘go and pay this, go and pay that’—he should be fired,” he said.
Mr Adorye also demanded the immediate transfer of the police commander in the area, stressing that retaining such officials undermines public confidence in the fight against illegal mining.
“All these people, including the police commander there, should be transferred immediately. We should not entertain some of these things. The President must be seen to be working,” he added.
He noted that the matter falls under the supervision of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Armah Kofi Buah, and the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Ahmed Ibrahim, urging them to urgently brief the President.
“They should, as a matter of urgency, approach the President and inform him of what is happening. We need to take action on this,” he said.
Mr Adorye concluded that the DCE’s continued stay in office contradicts the government’s ‘reset’ agenda, emphasising that officials who do not align with the policy direction should be removed.
“The DCE is not in tune with the reset. So the President must reset him. Anyone who is not in tune with the reset should be reset,” he emphasised.
