The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has announced the temporary suspension of the January 2026 salaries for 2,563 government employees following their failure to participate in the nationwide headcount exercise conducted in 2025 by the Ghana Audit Service.
In a statement issued on the matter, the CAGD confirmed that January 2026 salaries have been successfully paid to all eligible public sector workers on the national payroll. However, the affected personnel did not receive their salaries due to non-compliance with the mandatory verification exercise.
According to the Department, the salary stoppages were carried out on the recommendation of the Auditor-General as part of measures to strengthen payroll integrity and eliminate irregularities in public sector compensation.
The CAGD has urged all affected staff to immediately contact the Ghana Audit Service to complete the required clearance and verification processes to facilitate the reinstatement of their salaries.
“Affected staff who did not receive their January salary are kindly advised to 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 to complete the necessary clearance and verification process to enable the 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬.” the statement made of the Controller’s Facebook page assured.
The Controller and Accountant General’s Department reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and the timely payment of salaries, stressing that the action aligns with Ghana’s Public Financial Management laws and broader efforts to ensure value for money in public expenditure.
The nationwide headcount exercise forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at cleaning the government payroll and preventing the payment of salaries to unverified or non-existent workers.
