Residents of Salman in the Western Region have expressed anger over the rise in illegal mining (galamsey) activities within the community.
This follows the arrest of five illegal miners by the Essiama District Police Command, with support from the community.
The miners were arrested for illegally mining within the concession of Adamus Resources.
To the concerned residents, the illegality being perpetrated is negatively affecting the viability of the mining concession.
The youth, in particular, are calling on President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to intervene and ensure that issues surrounding the concession are thoroughly addressed.
The concession, owned by Adamus Resources Limited, is heavily protected by the company’s security.
However, it is often invaded by illegal miners.
The community believes that persons who have legally acquired concessions should take steps to protect them from illegal miners.
