The Savannah Regional Security Council has directed the family of Joseph Bayel Trumah, the late Member of Parliament for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, to suspend plans to hold his funeral rites.
The decision was taken at an emergency Joint meeting of the Savannah Regional Security Council and the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Security Council (REGSEC & DISEC) held on January 16, 2026, on measures to maintain peace and security of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly Area and beyond.
According to the Council, this is in view of a careful review of the security situation of the area and the security signals picked up on the ground by the State intelligence agencies and upon an assessment of the causes of the recent Gonja- Brifor conflict in the Bole and Sawla Tuna Kalba Districts.
It also cited the potential breach of the security situation of the area, likely to be triggered by the burial and performance of the funeral of the Late MP.
“The Joint REGSEC-DISEC of Savannah and Sawla Tuna Kalba directs the Family of the Late Hon Joseph Bayel Trumah to put on hold all activities and preparations towards the performance of the funeral slated for 16th- 18 January, 2026, for further engagement.”
The funeral has been hindered by chiefs of the area as they are demanding GH¢944,955 as compensation, said to cover legal costs from a long-running land dispute involving the late MP and the former and current chiefs of Tuna.
