Asafo-Agyei (L) has debunked claims that scholarships are being sold, as alleged by Owusu Nkansah
The Director-General of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has reacted to claims made by former National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) CEO Kofi Owusu Nkansah that government scholarships are being sold for up to GH¢100,000 under the current administration.
In a post shared on social media on February 3, 2026, Asafo-Agyei indicated that the allegation by Nkansah cannot be true because of his claim that said scholarships were given to people to study in the United Kingdom.
He explained that the John Dramani Mahama government has not even issued one scholarship for any person to study in the United Kingdom since it took office.
“I am glad His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has taken the wild allegations by Kofi Owusu Nkansah on Sompa FM seriously and referred the matter to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) for a full investigation into claims that scholarships were sold by some state institutions to some NPP party members or Ghanaians to study in the United Kingdom (UK).
“In his quest for relevance in his sinking party, he conveniently ignored a simple fact: For example, if you take the Ghana Scholarship Authority, under my leadership as Director-General, not a single scholarship award has been made for anyone to study in the United Kingdom, as he alludes. This position has been well communicated to institutions in the UK,” he said.
The Director-General said that the former NEIP boss made the allegation to get the attention of the police, adding that scholarships will be offered to only deserving people under his watch and not sold to the highest bidder.
“The evil that men do indeed lives after them. While the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration left the nation worst off, with the past Registrar having issued fake awards into March 2025, one thing is now certain — the era where the rich, connected, and influential cornered scholarships outside merit is over,” he added.

What the NEIP boss said:
Nkansah alleged that he knows people, including members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who have purchased some of these scholarships for sums as high as GH¢100,000 or more.
“These are the things Dr Bawumia says he would stop, and so he is bringing digitalisation, which was accepted by the delegates. I would not be a hypocrite to pretend that it doesn’t happen, because even with the new NDC government, I know people who have bought a foreign scholarship… The person bought the scholarship and has travelled abroad.
“I don’t know the exact amount the scholarships are sold for, but some cost up to GH¢100,000. Some NPP members are even buying it to travel abroad, I’m telling you,” he claimed.
He added, “What I’m trying to say is that whether the NDC is in power or the NPP, some of these excesses happen. We cannot pretend or think that it doesn’t happen. I’m talking about things that have already happened.”
@asafoagyeialex4 FOR THE RECORDS- This has been Government position on awarding scholarships to the United Kingdom (UK) since I assumed office in February, 2025. This position to halt any scholarship application to United Kingdom which has been strictly adhered to has been well communicated to the UK Government. – I revealed same in my last public interview on UTV on June 4, 2025. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah has lost it. Aside the fact that he has no credibility, he has overreached himself and compounded the challenges facing his nation-wrecking Boss, now Abuakwa South MP.
