The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has defended the distribution of scooter ambulances in Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds under the government’s free primary health service.

His Majesty stated that they will augment healthcare delivery for pregnant women and the sick.

The Asantehene spoke during a courtesy call by the WHO Country Director for Ghana, Dr Fiona Braka, at Manhyia Palace on April 22, 2026.

“A few days ago, I read about some scooter ambulance supplies to the CHPS compound. I was told people are making fun of it that we couldn’t buy an ambulance,” Otumfuo said.

“But this will mitigate to augment healthcare delivery. It will help pregnant women and the sick who seek help in the CHPS compound.”

CHPS compounds serve remote communities where road networks are poor and traditional ambulances struggle to reach patients.

The scooter ambulances are designed to navigate difficult terrain and provide timely transport for referrals, especially for obstetric emergencies.

Otumfuo’s comments followed Dr Fiona Braka’s request for the Asantehene’s support to promote maternal health, end HIV and Mental Health stigma and sustain child vaccination beyond GAVI.

The Asantehene has consistently advocated for practical solutions to healthcare gaps in rural communities across the Asante Kingdom and Ghana.
