Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah recently brought to light a concerning attempt by Chairman Aluta, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency chairman for Juaben, to interfere with a lawful arrest at an illegal mining site.
The incident unfolded after Afrifa personally visited a galamsey operation, which was reportedly linked to Chairman Aluta, and facilitated the arrest of a miner engaged in the illegal activity.
This move was part of Afrifa’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, which has severely impacted Ghana’s environment and water bodies.
Shortly after the arrest, Chairman Aluta reached out to Afrifa, seeking to influence the situation.
According to Afrifa, the NPP chairman made contact with him in a bid to arrange for the miner’s release, explaining that the miner’s mother had approached him, pleading for her son’s freedom.
Rather than address the illegality of the mining activity, Aluta allegedly attempted to persuade Afrifa to make a deal that would see the arrested individual freed.
In an unexpected twist, Afrifa, knowing the sensitive nature of the matter, had already prepared for such an occurrence and secretly recorded the entire conversation between himself and the chairman.
He later played the recording on his radio programme, publicly exposing the attempted interference.
The tape, now circulating widely across social media platforms, has sparked outrage, with many expressing concern over the influence of political figures on illegal mining operations in the country.
This incident has further fueled debates about how deeply entrenched illegal mining is in certain political circles and the challenges faced in addressing the issue.
Afrifa’s decision to expose the situation has earned him praise from some quarters for standing his ground against pressure, while also shedding light on the complexities involved in fighting illegal mining in Ghana.
The matter has raised serious questions about the role of local politicians in the galamsey menace and the need for stricter enforcement of laws, free from political interference.
